ʻIKE KUMU
When formulating our project we wished to address the fact that Hawaiian language is not a priority for students or faculty at Kamehameha schools, thus it is not perpetuated, or regularly practiced by the vast majority of members of Kamehameha. In hopes to provide a solution to the lack of desire to pursue ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, our team aims to create a community here on campus that cultivates knowledge of mea Hawaiʻi. In our experience as Hawaiian language students, getting outside of the classroom and into the earth, or centering classroom lessons around relevant topics, ideas, or fields of interest, is one of the best ways to grab hold of the haumāna’s attention and ultimately, make them more interested in integrating ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi into their lives outside of the classroom.

WHY LANGUAGE?
How successful is a culture if the language is still not regularly practiced by the vast majority of those who claim to identify with it?
This project is put in place to stir up a passion for ʻōlelo in modern-day culture here in Hawaiʻi. This generation wants to be apart of something much greater than ourselves, and putting our knowledge about mea Hawaiʻi into practice is an outlet for us to express parts of ourselves that we didn’t know we had.
We hope to re-discover lost identities. We hope to encourage members of the Hawaiian language community. We hope to instill a newfound passion for ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi here on the Kamehameha Kapālama campus, which will benefit all of those who come into contact with this community. The effects of this project would then impact individuals and families across the isles. In doing so, we will strengthen the foundations of our culture and raise up a community of individuals that are unified in understanding of the importance of language not only here at Kamehameha, but in Hawaiʻi, our beloved home.
